The reason animation was so great in the 80s and 90s, is because that is PEAK hand drawn animation. The art of cartooning, the techniques of masters handed down, technology specifically designed for drawing by hand. All these things had been developing for almost 100 years.
Then computers came along. For a brief period, these crafts merge. The master animators of old could use digital technology to enhance their animation. That's why you get absolutely fucking incredible 2D animation even in TV shows during the 90s.
However, the reason for its decline, is because there are no more animators. The art of cartooning has been almost completely lost. A relic of a day gone by. Kids don't draw cartoons anymore.
It will never ever be back because there will never again be thousands of people getting into hand drawn animation.
