Just like the roman soldier didn't disrespect the guy on the cross. he killed a guy that didn't deserve to rot on a cross for three days before dying. So by spearing the fellow he would die fast as fuck and not suffer needlessly. Considering if you fucked with a condemned person you tended to take their place on the cross instead in roman law it was a seriously powerful statement about how the romans didn't think he should have been there. And that the commander didn't have the soldier tossed onto the cross show it was a sanctioned mercy killing or at least a pardoned offense. That makes the no disciple a better disciple than the rest even seeing as the killer was living the christs teachings more so than the sheep.
