Female circumcision was banned in the US in 1996. There were cases of female circumcision in the 1950s, and it was promoted for similar reasons to male circumcision, like cleanliness and protection from disease. It was never done on as large of a scale, but it was very common for girls that were born with large clitorises.
The law that bans only the circumcision of one gender in the US is unconstitutional, as the 14th amendment guarantees equal protection under the law for all US citizens.
