/b/ too thought it was immune, surrounded by its ocean of piss... but even it was swamp with reactionaries and extremists posting 24/7 drawing in regulars and apathetics that normal wouldn't engage in such nonsense.
To the point it choked the board of life and originality.
It became the ultimate shitpost, and everyone was responsible, so banning just wouldn't work.
Thus the invention of the containment board was the last line of response.
