Not to say some dudes legit don't worship death and kill people through weird cults but cartels have been ramping up violence to scare each other and their own as well
It wasn't always like this, they used to, to some degree, have a code and only fucked with each other
Around the 2000s especially after 9/11 they had to fight over territory a lot more since border security tightened
Groups like Los Zetas started killing indiscriminately leading to other cartels having to change their modus operandi to keep up with the competition
Now add modern day technology where everyone has a video phone and you get your modern day torture vids
Again, some guys definitely fully immerse themselves in La Santa Muerte but most just larp to fit in and kill because that's the way the game is played now
