As its come up, let's revisit what prayer is.
Generally prayer is understood as the application of the mind and will towards God. This is applied in multiple forms but is consistent insofar as it is supposed to be you conforming your will and your faith towards God. The point of it is greater communion with God and through that we come to meet the mark to receive what God had planned for us or others when ready. Prayer is largely a "meeting the mark" process and method for individual growth, doctrinally. And on prayer for others, the Christian view is we are not all islands onto ourselves but interconnected as one "body" as they would say. And so our deeds have consequence towards the rest of this body regardless of scale.
Prayer can take many forms - petition, Thanksgiving, song, meditation, and the like - but the ability to simply speak to God is difficult for people. To find the words or the gravity of respect for God is difficult for many. Due to it it's a common western practice to have prayers from saints and the generally devout written down that people say and attempt to conform themselves to so they aren't simply saying words but believing and owning those words. This is a common aid for those struggling to pray.
