In 2nd century BC, Edomites from Idumea were initially subsumed into the "Jewish" community by the Hasmonean leader John Hyrcanus I via forced-conversion to Hebrasim. These newly "Jewish" Edomites got revenge on Judea a century later under Edomite King Herod, who replaced the entire Hasmoneon royal line with his own Edomite lineage, completing the identity theft.
So this name-stealing trend even predates Khazaria.
