I understand what you mean by being "overly-serious" in a thread. The lack of small amounts of trolling and joking makes it harder for new people to feel comfortable with posting (i.e. you are less likely to want to post if every reply in the thread is a wall of text about some statistics about metals, compared to if there were some occasional memes that were friendlier to people with less knowledge).
