Dismissing the worlds great holy books as being "superstition" is to lose so much. For instance, Hinduism, is the guiding force behind the philosophy of over a billion people. To understand the world, and the people in it, you must have a robust understanding of hinduism. You dont have to "agree" with it, or even believe its right in any way, but you must understand it basic precepts, or you cannot understand this world. The same is true of Bhuddism, Christianity and Islam. The ideas presented in these books are so seminal in the values of so many people (literally BILLIONS of people), that too not know them, is to be blind in a world full of motivations of others.
I find that people who are the most dismissive of these holy works, are also the people who have read the least of them, and have little understanding of the teachings contained in them. To understand the bible, you need to read it! And you need toread it carefully, from one end to the other. And as you read it, you need to consider what it is saying. And it says many things, on many levels. It is filled with passages, that to a child mean one thing, to an aldult another, and to the wise, something very deep. The same can be said of the Koran. These books are written on multiple levels.
I am not saying you have to believe in anything, Im saying you have to understand it.
