>>20071066The inspiration for this line came in October 1968, when Paul was traveling in a taxi to JFK airport with Linda Eastman and her daughter Heather. Looking at the driver’s identification panel, he noticed that it read ‘Eugene Quits, New York Police Department.’
“So I got ‘So I quit the police department’, which are part of the lyrics to that. This was the great thing about the randomness of it all. If I hadn’t been in this guy’s cab, or if it had been someone else driving, the song would have been different. Also I had a guitar there so I could solidify it into something straight away.” – Paul, 1997
To a policeman, “robbery” is a legal category and punishable offense. Policeman Paul would be obligated to come down hard on this bird.
But if he were to quit the police department to become a regular bloke with a steady job, it’s just “stealing.” There wouldn’t have to be any legal consequence.
