it then gave me a little graphic and said i "made the land my home" and took me to a new start screen where i got to select one of the gated areas
i think it had to do with resting with enough food enough times at maximum "experience" or whatever
fortunately i also just found out that you can open gates with more the wrong symbol as long as it's higher than the one listed on the gate
