Our cells evolved ways to repair this specific damage, but overexposure to UV will inevitably lead to permanent damage/mutation to the DNA, and death of the effected cells (sunburn). It's not like you need to be a genius to know this. If your skin spends too much time being exposed to the sun's rays, it becomes red and painful.
Take note that I am not saying that sunscreen is good for you, but neither is spending too much time in the summer sun unprotected.
