The most fascinating documentary by Sir David Attenborough was on BBC Earth just now. It dealt with mathematics in nature. For example, the Tunisian sand ants count their steps so they can find their way back home. But the most interesting part to me was bamboo. A certain kind of bamboo blooms only approximately every 110 years. It is said that an important factor was that it was an adaptation to keep the rodents from eating all the seeds. It would be interesting to see how much of an impact bamboo had on the historical development of China since it was said that the blooming of bamboo leads to massive increase in rodent population which would descend onto villages. And it's well known that China historically went through cycles of famine.
