One of the worst things floating around popular culture right now is the idea that an observed difference of some kind in behavior or outcomes is somehow easily related to an unchangeable biological feature. Quite possibly the most ridiculous, horrifyingly obtuse and ignorant, cruel kinds of reasoning stems from that—from the idea that you can observe a difference, postulate some sort of rigid biological mechanism from it, and conclude to some sort of hierarchy that has sweeping implications for society, outcomes, every member of a group, and a goddamn divine mandate for life course.
