imo it should be taught straightforward that Herod bribed Caesar and usurped the land of Judea and the pharisees ruling the people under him, who later created Judaism, were his people, except for a few such as Nicodemus may have had Israelite heritage. For whatever reason we are taught this in code, every Christian knows Herod sought to kill baby Jesus because he was not the rightful ruler by bloodline and highly paranoid about this. The reason Pilate made this sign is a bit of a mystery, an important clue is he felt forced/intimidated into his actions but had this sign put up against the protests of the demanding sect. Maybe the edomites had so trannified judea by that point, Pilate thought it funny that honorable pureblood Jesus intimidated these dysgenic freaks
