tb.h american school lunches are crap. Finnish students get free food all the way until they graduate high school/trade school. University students have to pay for their lunches, but its really cheap, at like 3-5€ per meal. The school food in some schools is sometimes really bad (especially in smaller schools that just get their food from other larger schools) but it depends on the company doing the catering.
My personal experience was that in elementary and middle school the catering was done by a company owned by the city so the food was crap. In trade school the food was made by a private company hired by the school (that got its money from the city) so it was better. All paid for by the government. I would have probably been okay with having to bring food from home or pay for it since my mom was a very caring person who would have packed lunches for me/paid for them if it was required.
