I could relate to "clowning" as i unconsciously did identify myself as the clown as a child as a way to avoid confrontation / criticism. Like, if they laugh at me pretending to be a fool they will never know the true me to criticize. Listen to the sample on audible, i decided to get it when he deacribed his childhood picture "not a smile, but a chimp showing his teeth" or something close to that
