I've heard countless prominent mathematicians and scientists held interest in alchemy and some even held the alchemical arts in higher standing than the works they're renowned for today, and that their more famous works were in service of some alchemical purpose. However, I don't know precisely what that means.
I also don't know how to begin researching this topic. How can I discern legitimate sources from bunk?
