No wonder Russia wants the Donbas and the West does too. The Donets Coal Basin (which is what "Donbas" is short for) has 60 billion tons of the world's highest-quality coal: high energy bituminous, coking bituminous, and anthracite.
While the USA and Australia are running out of met coal (enough left for a few decades of the really good stuff), Ukraine might have enough premium met coal for centuries to come. Whoever controls the Donbas could control world steel production for generations.
