for girls, being transgender is a way of fitting in. i.e. a tomboy or lesbian at their school transitions, since thats the most "progressive" thing to do, it causes a positive feedback loop that incentivies the other tomboys/lesbians to also go FTM. this happens because girls are affected by mimesis to a far greater degree than men.
on the flip side, dudes go the MTF route usually cuz of porn IMO, every single MTF i know was super into porn when they were kids
