Toyota had the best deal for what i needed in the base model Corolla. It was fairly close in the running with the Mazda3 in terms of price. Honda was about $3000 more expensive, to start.
My philosophy with cars is normally to buy 3-5 year old toyota or honda under 100k km with intent to keep for 15+ years until it turns to dust. That is what I did with my old car. I would have done so again if the cars available used in that condition at the time weren't being sold for something like 10% below brand new MSRP.
