>>8615902I'd recommend starting your research on paper first. I've done Ancestry and 23andMe. There's a lot of genetic overlap between different European groups, so you shouldn't rely on those to determine your ancestors' national origin.

I don't recommend 23andMe. All of my DNA matches on 23andMe are dumb as fuck. I've found some neat people through GEDmatch.
That being said, I'm grateful for (((consumer DNA testing))). Without it, I would've never found my biological grandfather. My mother was the result of an unplanned pregnancy. My biological grandmother hid in a maternity home and immediately put her up for adoption.
My biological grandfather had no idea what happened. Turns out his cousins were into genetic genealogy. Through my DNA matches with his cousins, I was able to determine who my biological grandfather was. He was ecstatic when he found out.
