They believe that suffering is largely the consequence of people being spoiled and selfish. This is why they practice ascetism to the point of self-crucifixion. Some can light themselves on fire without making a peep, others undergo a strict diet of poison in their later decades so their bodies will be easy to mummify as a testament to future generations.
What they consider to be "God" is the true self, the collective mind of all things that manifests itself in individual humans, like the waves of an ocean. The ocean is not capable of punishing its waves, or preventing them from inevitably returning to the whole.
