My opinion is quite mundane: I think they were designed at the cusp of our societies moving from a hunter-gatherer method to agriculture. And without any doubt they are astronomically aligned. Timing the seasons in that culture was vital to survival - to plant seeds and to reap harvests. And I'm sure that they had religious ceremonies that have been lost to time. They didn't have a written lore. The earliest literature that is genuinely English is Beowulf and it is pre-Christian.
It's the sacred side that I don't understand. Also the very dry Summer that we've had here has given archaeologists an opportunity to see by air (helicopters) very old patterns of land use and dating. I'll try to find and post an update on this.
