It was simultaneously over-extended and spread way too thin. Too much mindless action and stupid side plots without relevance, meanwhile at the end most people can't name half of the dwarves in the main cast. Idk, I just think it was a mistake, I didn't hate it, but I really don't care for it either. LOTR is probably my favorite movie series of all time, so that's a big chasm between the two.

The day of good wholesome LOTR content is over, the days have gone down in the West....into shadow. Just cherish the fact that we got those movies when we did, it was better than we deserve.
