Most people that look like the stereotype are retirees from the midwest or florida. They are old and clueless with zero investment in not looking like shit.
One of the things you often see is what I call "adventure wear", aka the kind of clothes you buy at REI to wear when you go hiking in a national park or whatever. My uncle does this shit whenever he travels - ripstop button up shirts that are SPF-whatever rated, sturdy trail/walking shoes, fanny pack or large camera bag, etc. It's because what you are looking at are mostly sedentary old people going on their "big adventure" overseas that they've probably planned for years. Traveling abroad is not really something that a lot of older Americans do frequently because it's super expensive. So they treat it like a safari adventure and "gear up" like this.
BTW you never see this shit with anyone under 40.
