If you weren't computer literate 20 years ago you had about 2-15 different anime to watch on TV depending on your region, but now there's thousands and Western companies have been carving up slices of it like they would any other resource.
The amount of nerds into it as a percentage of the population really hasn't changed, it's just something kids posting memes and searching for a place to belong.
