hollow knight is a game with a similar mechanic, but instead of leaving a bloodstain you leave behind a ghost or shadow or something that you have to kill to get your stuff back. in that game if you die along the way you lose everything without a chance to recover it until you kill the shadow
in my experience these things all tend to be very simple and straight forward. fallen order is notoriously buggy from what i've seen/heard, so if the system isn't working in some obvious way it's probably just glitched to all hell
