Plants should live in soil rich in organic matter like manure and have protective mulch over it like leaves or woodchips. Even grass clippings from mowed lawns can work as mulch, protecting the soil from direct sunlight, rain from beating down on it, and keeping moisture locked under, while providing a space for beneficial organisms and fungi to live. Some key agronomic crops are corn, beans, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, millet, wheat, oats, and rye. The last three can actually be mowed down into a form of mulch, blocking out weeds.
