At least in medieval Moldova and Romania, a plot of land would have two houses: one large, one small.
The parents and their children lived in the large house, while the grandparents - in the small one.
When the grandparents died and the children had children of their own, the parents would move into the small house.
Only the first son's family inherited, the rest would have to buy or rent their own plots.
Unmarried children usually stayed with their parents.
