If you use an anime one (especially screenshots from the show itself rather than art, which again tends to be rather "stale"), it creates a better impression of a character. If no one else uses the same character anyway, it's pretty much as good as having your own avatar. So for example, I'm the only person known as the "Mikuposter", so Miku is always associated with me.
