>if the readers have nothing to associate these names with, it's doomed to fail i thinki disagree entirely. i think what matters most by far is internal consistency and after that it's a matter of exposure. If you're literally just making sounds until you get one you like then it's never going to work of course, but if you were to go through the effort of constructing a limited syllabary and basic etymology for the way that words are formed then it won't take long at all for players to start seeing it as legitimate.
this sort of stuff is certainly harder with a narrative like a book/movie than a fully interactable world like tabletop rpgs. I have the good fortune of being in a situation where if a player asks some arcane creature it's name then laugh at how ridiculous it is, the creature can diegetically get angry and have some sort of outburst where it drops some more proper nouns. repetition legitimizes and all that.
