Having characters suddenly defy their established persona to engage in party-political sermonising or ideological “handwringing” (eg. Tom in HBO’s series Succession, a Hetero White dude yuppie working for a right-wing news channel suddenly denigrating his sex and ethnicity by using terms such as “stale, male and pale”).
