It's painfully obvious most people in this thread don't ACTUALLY know how this works.
The ray of light off the object, behind the blocker is shining out of the sides of the block. If you stand at the right angle, the ray hits your eyes (or in this case the cameraman's camera eye), which then constructs the virtual image in red allowing you to see whatever light just spilled past the blocker.
