In the story I'm writing about growing up in a small town in the Midwest USA, I tend to crap on religion a lot, but there's a reason for that. Amanda's hometown church was filled with hypocrisy, gossip and badmouthing of non-church members of the community.
In college, she found a church that's motto was Ductus Exemplo, lead by example. The first thing you saw when you walked in the doors was the parable of "Why did God create atheists?" Two other phrases that were said often were "Outreach don't preach" and "A church needs followers. A community needs leaders."
