I notice that if you look at the deficit data of the USA budget, it reflects exactly the opposite of what voters say are their preferences for "big" or "small" government. During my lifetime, the Republicans have always increased the deficit, signifying big-government policies, more or less, and only to the extent that "big" and "small" are stupid adjectives with which to describe the government. To the contrary, Clinton balanced the budget and the deficit was on a long term decreasing trend under Obama. Just like Bush II nuked the Clinton surplus, now Trump has nuked the Obama downtrend. I don't give a fuck about government spending but I mention it because often voters for R and D separate themselves according to whether they want big or small government, and it is the party of alleged small government that is making it big, and it is the party of so-called crazy liberal splurge spending which reduces the deficit with fiscally conservative policies in their budgets.
TLDR: Republicans are fiscal liberals and Democrats are fiscal conservatives.
