Buddhists view themselves as everything rather than an individual. In some way, shape or form, you will always exist, even if you've been partially erased?
Think of it this way, there's infinite possible mathematical shapes, and what's truly meant to exist mathematically cannot be erased. Certain realities can only afford a few shapes, and the other shapes will have the illusion have fading away. It's because of our sins that there is the illusion of death, when in reality all shapes or 'souls' are meant to exist and cannot truly be erased.
