For us, It goes back to the dustbowl era and earlier. Back then, the inside of the house was so dirty from the constant dust storms that it didn’t matter if your shoes were off or not. My grandpa remembers having to shovel out the house after a storm (this was in the 40s).
The old house to this day has heavy dust that settles after a big wind, remnants of all the dirt from back then. It was bad.
Also. My house has a boot scraper on the porch. Scrape the shit off your boots before coming in for lunch. Eat quick, then go back to work without having to untie/undress from coveralls, which takes time and energy you probably don’t have.
