You should follow the teachings of the Bible if you think they are true.
None of it makes sense, unless grounded in the basic doctrine.
If the basic doctrine holds, then the rest must be true regardless of how it makes you feel.
God is holy. He created us to commune with Him. We all rebel against Him, and this rebellion requires eternal separation from Him.
In His love, He sent His son Jesus (equally part of the Trinity with the Father, but still existing within the inherent hierarchy of the Trinity) to take our just punishment in our place. The punishment still had to happen because sin matters and God is merciful. If God did not judge, then that would mean rebellion would not matter. He would then not be holy and sovereign, and His mercy would not really be merciful.
God is love, and He is entirely just, and He is merciful.
