Islam, which was our next door neighbor, was born in 7th century AD, and since then, we've constantly been in a battle state to prevent us from becoming Muslim. They slowly wanted to eradicate Hinduism. We got buck broken so bad, that we forgot who we were before Islamic conquests, until the 17th century, when we had a period of local Hindu kings uniting together in various parts of the country, creating confederacies, and throwing away the yoke of Islam from around their necks. Such as the Sikh Empire, Maratha Empire, etc. This was the beginning of the Hindu revival movement. Then the British came in the 18th century, and used modern archaeological methods to unearth our glorious past - because unlike muslims, the Christian British were not interested in eradicating our culture, in fact they were seekers of knowledge, and there was a lot of ancient knowledge and wisdom in our Vedas, our Upanishads, our folk tales, our oral traditions.
They discovered that Sanskrit - which back then was an almost extinct language only used by few priests for conducting religious activities - was one of the 3 mother languages of the Indo-European family, being the parent of Persian languages, all Indic languages, and some south-eastern European/levantine/Caucasian languages
