I feel like we would have seen it in the fossil record, but there have been plenty of large animals discovered in the last 100 years, and we can't be completely thorough. We have records of smaller animals legitimately just avoiding humans and being considered extinct for about that same time, so to apply it to a larger animal is still possible, definitely, imo.
