It later became an official trend among fans, because in later installments of the show, Luigi would try to have people kill him off in the background; after Luigi died at the end of the last episode of the show, the scene was deleted.
In one case, the Luigi team decided to make Mario the protagonist (he was referred to as "The Master of Magic"; if the player dies and Mario is standing at a table) after having originally intended to play as the main playable character instead, who was also named Luigi. When Luigi was accidentally knocked over by Peach during the latter's dance, the writers suggested for him to die when Mario came to in order to make it fit with canon. Despite the character having a large and impressive fighting style, the writers ultimately decided against it, since Mario is typically seen as quite lazy in his attacks (in fact, the series usually gives him more time to train before going on stage).
