One of my favorite theories (for which i have no evidence what so ever though) is that the build up of the world is like this:
We have our planet, and around us the entire universe. However when you go through one of the polar openings the inside becomes the outside, exposing you to a complete other world which has our world and universe inside theirs instead. Metaphysically it would be a bunch of flat planes stacked upon another, making you rise up a world/dimension/realm going through one pole, and down through the other one, where the planes then are curved around themselves making the earth round.

Most Metal we find is in form of Oxids, aka rust. So those too could be the left overs of that civilization which rusted over the millenia and eventually got encapsuledin stone.

I can also see that the electromagnetic radiation makes us unable to perceive many of these things considering those can alter our conciousness
