>>7131370I can give you a quick history lesson
Iceland is an island in the north western most corner of europe.
In the viking age a man named Hrafna Flóki (raven Flóki, the odd dude in vikings) discovered it and gave it the name iceland after losing some of his family and much of his sheep in a harsh winter and then climbing up a mountain and only seeing snow all around
Later a dude named Eigill Skallagrímsson came to iceland and founded Reykjavík
Then a dude named Eiríkur Rauði or erik the red who had been outkast from norway was outkast from iceland and found & settled greenland, then his son Leifur Eiríksson discovered america and called it Vínland
About a hundred years later a dude named Snorri sturluson was born on iceland and created some books on norse mythology and norwegian kings Which remain one of the only sources for both
Some years pass and we become a part of norway and soon after denmark, once they take over norway
Some hundred years later the turks invade and take many icelanders as slaves
fast forward to ww2 and we get our independence from the danes
then we fought a war with the british about cod and won
and we still beat the english to this day in competitive sport
I guess that was a bit more than a quick history
tl;dr: we're a tiny norse colony that kept the language mostly the same
