It wasn't how he expected to spend the days after returning from the conference in Phoenix, but the money offered had been difficult to decline, even for him. And there was some silly horticultural exhibit at the museum here that his wife had been eager to attend. He was pleased, in sort of a guilty way, that the volume of work before him had eliminated the need to fabricate any pretext for not attending on his part.
