yeah, i feel the same way. i was just a dumbass kid when rage comics and i can haz cheezburger were current so my memory is a bit foggy, but i don't remember anyone expecting the memes to be evergreen.
people mostly seem mad that the "internet's sense of humor" has gotten a lot more cynical and ironic which conflicts directly with the dumb fun of the past. that's just the way these things go though. in order for things to improve you need criticism and commentary which are boring and mean so they turn into parody and then eventually low effort cynical jokes
