The highly suspicious anthrax attacks that occurred shortly afterwards. Supposedly the anthrax was sent by the attackers themselves, the envelopes came with letters that read "death to America, death to Israel". The neocons claimed that Iraq was manufacturing anthrax in secret "mobile weapons labs", which were labs-on-wheels that were always one step ahead of the UN investigators. Israeli intelligence claimed they witnessed a meeting in Prague where lead hijacker Muhammad Attah was passed a vial of anthrax by Iraqi security forces.
However it was all lies. Robert Mueller was sent to investigate this by the congress, and traced the anthrax back to America's OWN LABS! He accused some poor lab technician named Bruce Ivans, who conveniently committed suicide just before his trial. Later investigations found that Ivans could not possibly have traveled to send these letters.

The false intelligence was disseminated to the American public by various neocon talking-heads like Eliot A. Cohen and Judith Miller.

It wasn't supposed to be just Iraq, but a fullscale invasion of the entire middle east that would essentially turn all these countries into "democracies". They wanted Lebanon, Syria, Libya, and the big prize Iran. After the Iraq War became such a boondoggle they couldn't do outright invasions anymore, so they switched tactics to funding proxy armies and destabilizing these regimes. They used Al Quaeda militants to take down Libya, and they created Isis in Syria. And they are gearing up for war in Iran next
