It reminded people that humanity was wonderful, even if the conditions they were subjected to were awful. Even slave chants and songs would free the minds of African slaves in colonial America. As far as IQ is involved, well you know what they say...ignorance is bliss. In my opinion and experience, the higher the IQ, the less that person enjoys music on a fundamental level. Ironic because IQ is deeply corralated with pattern recognition, which is the basis of music (pattern based manipulation of silence and vibration). Many of the worlds greatest composers also hold many musical compositions in contempt, probably because they have high IQ's.
