Men with dark eyes and hair against pale skin look really good on camera. So do women with the same coloration, because of the high contrast. This is probably a reason why on screen blonde characters are generally very tan, because the contrast makes them "pop" on screen.
In real life, you get a pale, blue eyed, blonde haired man with decent features and the women will fawn over him (and vice versa.)
With television and movies commanding so much of our time and thoughts, it's no wonder that what is most attractive on screen becomes socially known as what's attractive in real life.
