By thinking they are "living their own lives" and ceasing to to levy value because you have some absurd notion of equality, you are throwing virtue out the window. And worse, if these people truly were your friends and you really did care about them, you certainly would want to inspire them and get them on the right track instead of allowing them to, literally, throw their lives away.
Did you ever hear the saying, "nice guys finish last"? You want to be nice, that is your only justification for doing this. The truth hurts and people resent success at times and you are afraid to confront these two things.
